Don Weber- Bodger Underwater

Most days Im envious of Don Webers shop in Paint Lick, Kentucky. It’s an old shopfront in a small town in a beautiful area of the country. The hardwood floors are perfect for old workbenches, hand tools, and other small items. Light streams in through the windows at the front, and Dons forge and blacksmith shop are down the steps and out the back. Its a great space and Don is one of our favorite authors; a wealth of knowledge earned through years of study and work. Don last appeared in our pages with an article about building a Hayrake table in the February 2009 issue, and he has been featured on Roy Underhills Woodwrights Shop.

A few days ago heavy rains pushed a nearby creek over its banks, sending four and a half feet of water into Dons shop. Along with the water came mud, trash and used oil from an auto repair shop across the street. Don was still working to clean up the mess. I spoke to him this morning, and he was busy at work, making progress as his shop and his life are put back together. The table saw has been dried and is running. Tools and benches are being cleaned. Ever the optimist, Don will clean the blacksmith shop last, telling me all the oil is keeping my hammers from rusting.

His extensive collection of woodworking books was the most significant loss. Many of these books were rare and out-of-print. Don was unable to save these items and is working to compile a list of titles he will have to replace them. He is out of business until things are back to normal. He makes traditional iron and wood products and teaches these skills.

Don can be reached through his website Handcraft Woodworks. He will also be attending the Woodworking in America Conference in October.
